Local History in the Classroom: Using NYS Census Manuscripts and DBQs for Immigration Studies
The purpose of this project is for students to examine the topic of US immigration from 1890-1925 by using Cortland, NY as a case study. Students deal with the question “once in the US, why did these immigrants decide to come to Cortland, and what happened to them once they arrived in Cortland?” This presentation will engage participants in collecting and analyzing census data, use of photos and postcards, maps, student computer presentations, and a DBQ essay.
Presenter(s): Thomas L. Hyder, retired Social Studies Teacher, Smithtown High School
Length: 1 hour 15 minutes
Level: Middle – High
