Description: Students learn the rights and responsibilities attached to being a citizen.

Learning Goals:

  • Understand that only qualified citizens may vote
  • Recognize that many groups of people were not permitted to vote in the past
  • Describe the election process, as well as methods of choosing other than the type of voting used on Election Day
  • Identify some characteristics of elections: the mechanics of registering and voting, the purpose of a campaign, the nature of political parties
  • Identify some political parties and their symbols
  • Use news resources to follow the issues and candidates in the upcoming elections
  • Participate in a mock election held in the classroom
  • Describe how adults in our communities participate in elections
