Description: Students read a story from the 1840s that is told by a young boy who travels by wagon to the general store with his family. In reading this story, students learn about the role of the general store in the mid-19th-century community, and they  compare and contrast the buying and selling of goods of that time with today’s merchandising practices.

Learning Goals:

  • Identify ten items found in a general store during the mid-19th century
  • Identify the sources of the general store inventory
  • Explain the concept of barter and why it was used, and identify several items or tools used as barter
  • Discuss the role of the general store in the mid-19th-century community
  • Compare a mid-19th-century shopping experience with a modern-day shopping experience
