Young Yorkers Leaflet:
Folktales in Our Communities

Teacher Edition, Page 1
Description: Students explore the tall tales, legends, jokes, riddles, tongue-twisters, and superstitions that characterize much of what we generally call folklore. Folklore is history, probably one of the most underrated forms of history at that. And yet, it is wonderfully instructive in its view of the past as knowledge handed down from generation to generation.

Learning Goals:

  • Gain a familiarity with folktales and the influence of oral tradition in the lives of students
  • Explore the rich heritage of folklore and folktales in New York State, especially as expressed in local communities
  • Develop skills of interviewing family members, friends, and neighbors to learn about the beliefs and traditions of other people

Number of pages: 10 (teacher edition – 5; student edition – 5)
