Learning goals:

  • Explore the Haudenosaunee view of the universe and the importance of the Three Sisters
  • Read 17th and 18th century journal entries and captivity narratives to identify some of the different ways in which corn, beans, and squash were used in food preparation
  • Explore change in the Haudenosaunee way of life as a result of the “war on vegetables”
  • Create a Three Sisters garden and explore the science behind this traditional technique
  • Look at the artwork of Stan Hill, a Haudenosaunee bone carver, to develop an understanding of artistic communication and the connection between the personal and cultural forces that shape the artist’s work
